What is stress and how does it present itself? Your ability to cope with stress is dependant on your health and wellbeing. Your adrenal glands are located on top of your kidneys and have two main functions. They produce the hormone adrenaline and noradrenalin that allows your body to cope with stress. Their other function is to produce a group of hormones called corticosteroids that look after the body's inflammatory processes. If you are under stress or are suffering from prolonged stress your adrenal glands do not work optimally and your health can become impaired. Such health complaints seen are poor immune function, allergies, asthma, eczema, food intolerance, sinus, pain, digestion upset.
In practice I see people who had a major stressful event occur in their life 2 to 3 years ago that they have dealt with but they are suffering poor health and are not the person they used to be. They may use sugar or caffeine to get through their day, use alcohol at night to relax. They are often described by their friends and family as not their old self, edgy, not letting the little things go or suffering from many of the above symptoms. This is simply because their adrenal glands are sluggish and have become exhausted as a result of the constant demand on them.
